Hello JeffCo Greenways Volunteers!
Please consider joining us on Monday, January 20th for our MLK Day of Service at the Mount Olive Cemetery. The historic Mount Olive Cemetery is an African-American cemetery associated with the historic Mount Olive Baptist Church. Nearly 770 graves are estimated to exist in the cemetery, with headstones dating to the mid-1880s. A number of the graves are thought to have been moved, and many are unmarked or marked simply with small iron crosses and rocks. A number of headstones indicate the burials of veterans of World Wars I and II including one marker for a veteran of the Spanish American War from the late 1890s. Through the years, invasive Privet has consumed parts of the lot, and due to its proximity to Venice Rd trash has unfortunately been thrown out of cars littering the perimeter of the cemetery.
We would love your help in restoring the dignity and preservation to the Mount Olive Cemetery through tasks such as litter removal, Privet removal, and some light pruning of some young pine trees.
Location: 1031 Sydney Dr, Birmingham, AL 35221 (Be sure to park on the strip along Venice Road across the street from the cemetery. Parking is limited so please be mindful of other cars needing space to park. Be sure to park as far away from the street as you can and mind the traffic as you cross. A staff member will be there on the strip to assist in parking.)
When: Monday, January 20th, 9:00 to 11:30 am
What to bring: personal gloves (if desired)
What we'll provide: loppers, weed wrenches, trash bags, trash picker-uppers, gloves, light snacks, reflective vests and water bottles.
